Im Jahr 1978 versetzt der sogenannte "Grabber" eine Kleinstadt in Colorado in Angst und Schrecken. Immer wieder verschwinden Kinder spurlos. Die Grundschülerin Gewn sieht zwar in ihren Träumen einen Mann mit schwarzen Luftballons, der Kinder verschleppt - traut sich aber nicht, etwas zu sagen, weil ihr alkoholkranker Vater sie dann verprügelt. Aber dann wird auch Gwens 13-jähriger Bruder Finney entführt - und findet sich plötzlich in einem schalldichten Keller wieder, wo ihn der maskierte Grabber begrüßt. Schreien hilft hier gar nichts - aber an der Wand hängt ein Telefon, das trotz durchgeschnittenem Kabel immer wieder klingelt. Offenbar sind es die Geister der früheren Opfer des sadistischen Serienmörders, die sich an ihrem Mörder rächen und zugleich Finney vor einem ähnlichen Schicksal beschützen wollen.
